Changing Directions

The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting a different outcome. If you were driving and you knew that you were going in the opposite direction of your intended destination, then you would be insane to do anything but pop a u-ie, dodge the inevitable evil glares of fellow motorists, and put the pedal to the metal as Highway to Hell blasted in the background.

For many of us, the desire to lose weight is overwhelming. It is the northern star in the night sky of our life,  a lighthouse on a dark and stormy night at sea. It’s basically the guiding principle in all things we do in life. Will going to the gym help me toward my goal of losing weight? Yes. Let’s do it. Will eating that second piece of pizza? No. Back away from the delicious cheesiness slowly and deliberately. How about binge watching the 4th season of Doctor Who? Probably not, but emotional roller coasters have to burn some kind of calories, right?

All that to say, I’ve been focusing on the wrong things. I’ve been focusing on what I can’t have as opposed to what I already have. I’ve been stressed, looking toward MIA as a friend as opposed to the frenemy she is, and really just doing things all wrong.

I’m going to change directions with this blog. Not that anyone actually reads it anyway. But I do. And maybe someone will. Some day. Let’s look at what we have, not at what we don’t. Let’s focus on how to tone and be healthy, not how to disappear into a frail mess. I’ve been there before. And honestly, I didn’t look that great. Really. I was a gaunt little mass of crap.

I may have put some weight on from that time, but I also put on a little perspective as well. And I’m sure that’s worth its weight in gold.

Detox Diet

Has anyone ever done the Lemon Juice detox diet? I think I’m going to start this week. I need something to kick my body into gear. I need to lose my last 8 pounds by  Thanksgiving. Maybe doing a fast will assist…

Juices and smoothies

Mi mamacita just got me a single serving blender. I cannot wait to try all kinds of smoothies and juices. I really want to do a short juice diet to detox. I think now is the time. Wahoo!!

Dealing with Old Arthur

I have been in pain for the majority of my life. Since my teenage years, I have complained of back, neck, and knee pain. No one ever really listened to these complaints. The pain got worse and worse over the years until there were days and weeks where I could barely walk without the immense pressure I felt on my joints.

Last October, someone finally listened.

It was the first time I’d seen her, this new doctor. I told her my complaints and she promptly ordered blood tests. That was nothing new- plenty of doctors had ordered tests in the past but they never amounted to much of anything. When the results came back inconclusive, she decided to send me to a bone scan.

It was seriously the most Star Trek experience of my life! If you’ve never had a bone scan, I highly recommend it. You’ll feel all space-y wace-y and stuff. Just do it.

And whadaya know- I have arthritis.

26 years old and diagnosed with two different kinds of arthritis.

Well shit.

Of course, I sort of already knew this. Either I had arthritis or I was the worst hypochondriac in the history of time and space. Pain had become the norm. In fact, I can’t actually remember a day when I felt no pain. I’ve had days that rated as 2s and other days that rated as 8s. But no pain free days. It’s been my constant friend for almost 20 years.

And now it had a name. Arthur.

My grandmother would comment that Old Arthur was visiting when she was having an especially rough day with her arthritis. But she was in her sixties, so it was to be expected. Arthur hanging out with me? Not so much.

Seems I won the genetic lottery.

Only I never wanted to.

It’s been a year since the diagnosis and I’ve tried many different treatments with minimal success. 3 different pain and inflammation medications; diet and nutrition; anti-inflammatory diets; exercise; and I should really consider buying stock in Aleve with the rate that I use it.

But Arthur stays around. He’s my constant buddy, my bosom companion. As winter in Michigan descends upon me, I am getting a bit nervous. It’s been almost 10 years since I had to deal with the harshness of northern winters. But I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Besides, I always have that bottle of Aleve in the medicine cabinet.

So I’ve been doing alright lately with the diet- regular ups and downs and such. Spent yesterday at the Ren Faire… drank a lot of wine. But didn’t really eat. No idea how I didn’t end up with a hangover. Oh well!

I was just diagnosed with osteoarthritis on Friday. Yep, at the ripe old age of 26, I have an old woman’s disease. Yippee. At least I know why I’m constantly in pain. The only medication I have now is an anti-inflammatory. Oddly enough, it’s the same med that caused kidney disease in my grandmother and that my mother reacted badly to. So… we’ll see.

Well, due to that, I think I am going to have to do some serious research into anti-inflammatory diets. I need something to manage my condition. This past week was murder what with the weather change. Didn’t make it to the gym once. Could barely walk for most of the week, let alone exercise. Barely ate, too. So there’s a grace.

Must get back on, though. Must. Could use some encouragement. Anybody else want a buddy??

Love Makes the World Go Round

It has been such a long time. Life has been stressing me beyond the max and quite honestly I could not cope. I have been in and directing several shows within the last month. But now I have to get back on track. You see, there’s this guy… We’ve been friends for several years, but this past year we became very close and I think I’ve started developing feelings for him. Well, he invited me to his BMT (Air Force Basic Training) graduation. This is a big deal. I want to look nice. I have until June 20th to lose 10 pounds. Doable? Yes. Completely… I just have to put the fork down.
